The Redding Youth Soccer League Missfits and Kaos club teams were very active over the August 21st weekend throughout CYSA. From the new U11 Kaos Rage taking their first win to the U16 Missfits Bandits winning their 3rd tournament in a row, RYSL was well represented!

Mad River Redwood Classic

The U12 Kaos Rebels placed for the first time this year going 3-1 at the Mad River Redwood Classic. With 9 different players scoring a total of 11 goals, the Rebels finished third, narrowly missing out on 2nd place on tiebreakers. The Rebels opened with a close-fought 0-1 loss to the home team, Mad River Orange) at 8 am on Saturday. They rebounded from that with victories over the Eureka Breakers (3-0), the Mad River Blue (4-0) and the Eel River Rapids (4-2). The Rebels are now 4-3 and will next be in action when they open league play on September 11.

The U11 Kaos Rage won their first victory of the year, 3-0 over the Mad River Blue. The Rage went on to a 1-3 record for the weekend in their first U12 tournament.

Woodland Sunshine Classic

Missfits Bandits: Front row-Brooke Gaddy, , Adrianna Matagulay, Cambrey Knapp, Erin Lanzi, Brenna Groom, Lizzie Lupercio, missing from photo-Breanna Brown; -Standing- Erin Martin, Anna Harvey, Morgon Magnuson, Maia Chin, Jordon Asincar, Kylie Bergstrom, Allyssa Leffler, Sara Stratte, Ali Goodman; Rear Coaches- Asst. Ralph Magnuson, Head-Fred Bergstrom, missing- Asst. Brian Gaddy

RYSL was well represented at the Woodland tournament with two Kaos and two Missfits teams in attendance. The U19 Missfits Renegades and the U17 Kaos Surge both finished in third place. The U12 Kaos Raiders continued their streak of strong finishes by taking home the championship!

The U16 Missfits Bandits won their 3rd consecutive tournament of the year going undefeated for the weekend. The opened with a 0-0 tie with the Butte United Legacy. They followed that up with a 3-0 victory over the Elk Grove Shock. Sunday started with a 3-0 victory over the home side, Woodland United. They wrapped up the weekend beating the Anderson AC United team 1-0. The Bandits will attempt to keep their string of victories and tournament championships going next weekend at the Pleasanton Soccer City Warm-up.

Santa Clara Rotary Tournament

The U13 Missfits Adrenaline hit their stride with a 4-0 showing at the Santa Clara tournament, gaining their revenge on the tournament that they felt they should have won last year. The Adrenaline advanced to the Final after beating Hollister in the semi-final 2-1. Both of Adrenaline’s goals came in the closing minutes of the match after falling behind 0-1 early. They took the championship with a 1-0 victory – again scoring in the last 5 minutes of the match. The coaches are beginning to believe the girls are doing it on purpose to stress the coaches out!

Azzurri Peach Classic

The U11 Missfits Valkyrie opened their season by winning their inaugural tournament with 3 wins. The Valkyrie opened the weekend with a victory over the Red Bluff Blast Extreme, 2-0. They then fell to the Vacaville Lady Knights 0-2. Sunday opened with a 8-0 victory over the home side, Azzurri Fury putting the Valkyrie into the Championship match. The match ended up being a rematch with the Vacaville Lady Knights – but this time the Valkyrie revenged their earlier loss, 1-0.

At the June 2010 Redding Youth Soccer League Board of Director’s Meeting, the Board implemented two changes for the upcoming Fall soccer season. Both changes are directly aimed at improving the soccer experience for our youth players.

First up, the Board has modified the number of players on the field and on a roster in the Under 8 and Under 10 age groups. This change brings RYSL into line with the current policies and practices encouraged by the US Youth Soccer Association and in use by most of the states. Starting this Fall the Under 8’s will play with 6 players on the field. Formerly RYSL played with 7 players. In keeping with this change the roster size was also reduced by one player. Similarly, the number players on the field for the Under 10’s was reduced to 8 (with the corresponding elimination of one player on the roster). This change will allow each player to touch the ball more times during the game and allow them to be more involved.

The other change was to make all age groups within RYSL gender pure (although girls may still request to play on boy’s teams). It has been proven that at the younger age groups, it is crucial for the development of the players that they be involved and maximize their touches on the ball. With the girls and boys mixed, many girls shy away from the more aggressive boys and don’t ever touch the ball. However, when a team of all girls play, everyone is involved.

Board of Director meetings are held the first Monday of each month. See the calendar at left for the next meeting date and time.

The terrible taste of defeat from last year’s Association Cup final loss made this year’s victory taste that much sweeter for the Redding MissFit Renegades U19 girls’ club soccer team.

The local squad won what can be considered a state title Sunday, posting a 2-0 victory over the Petaluma Red Devils to win the championship tournament. The 2009 edition came up just short, losing in the title match, but behind a pair of goals from U-Prep star Kimmy Micheletti, the Renegades won it all at this year at Redding Soccer Park.

“They’re going to remember the shared friendships and the shared bond. They are truly a team of sisters and they will remember that the most,” said coach Keith Stewart. “They’ve been playing together since before high school. To be able to bring that home was not only for themselves but for the players before them.”

The U16 boys team from Redding also made the title match, but fell 5-0 to the Shamrock Rovers of Santa Rosa. Coach Brian Crane said a bad start doomed his squad, but it was a historic accomplishment for his team to make it to the championship, also at RSP.

“This was the first time a U16 boys team ever made it to the final eight, let alone the final match,” he said. “It’s a group of boys who have played together since U12 and a number play AAU basketball together. It’s a group of kids who are good kids and good athletes.”

Crane’s team is 30-4-4, using players from Shasta, Enterprise, Foothill, U-Prep, West Valley as well as a home-schooled player.

For the MissFit Renegades, the early morning game went into halftime in a scoreless deadlock. Micheletti opened the scoring in the 55th minute when she gained possession and barely eluded the goalkeeper, who had come out from the goal to try and make a stop. Micheletti tapped the ball in, and later in the contest, she used a pass from U-Prep teammate Andria Clagg to get another score.

It turned out to be a huge day for Micheletti, as she came home after the game, took a nap and then went to Shasta College and won MVP honors in the Lions All-Star Basketball game.

“I woke up around 7:20, ate breakfast, put my uniform on. I probably had been up earlier because I couldn’t sleep because I was so nervous,” Micheletti said. “They were both very rewarding but soccer is definitely the best feeling. We won eight straight to get there and we had been working for this title for four years.

“We came into the semis and we were like ‘We don’t want it to be the same as last year.’ We hated that feeling. We have so much heart. We didn’t want to have that feeling again.”

The MissFit Renegades also got a shutout from U-Prep’s Kyleigh Stewart in goal.

In seven games in the Association Cup run, the Renegades owned a 20-2 scoring advantage, and they moved their record to 34-5-1. The team has one more tournament, at the Rogue Valley Cup in Medford, Ore.

“We played in the big match at home last year and it meant a lot to us last year. It meant a lot more to the players to win it at home,” Keith Stewart said. “Most of them have been playing since they were 4 or 5, so this is the tail end of the team. Out of 17 players, 11 are seniors in high school. It was the last hurrah for a lot of them.”

The roster for the team includes Central Valley’s Chelsie Miles, U-Prep’s Cynthia Yee and Foothill players Jenna Vestal, Jean Mutch, Janelle Gaddy and Tyler Enbody.

Shasta players are Amber Fiscus, Danielle Jacobsen, Erica Hunting, Hillary Key, Allie Maxwell and Corinne Smith. From West Valley, there is Cassie DeBonis and Taylor Lambert.
